Solution

Iodine is not synthesized by the body, hence it must be present in our diet. Iodine is an important constituent of the thyroid hormone. This hormone is required for the normal functioning of the body. When iodine becomes deficient, a medical disorder known as goitre occurs due to the enlargement of the thyroid glands. Also, the production of the thyroid hormone is affected. This affects metabolic processes and causes weight gain, unhealthy hair, teeth and nails. Severe iodine deficiency causes mental disorder.
