Question

What will happen if we use tungsten instead of copper for making conducting wires?

Open in App
Solution

Copper is the least expensive material with suitable conducting ability to permit its use in conducting wires . The conducting ability of a material is indicated by its resistivity. Resistivity of copper is 1.7 x 10-8 ohm meter and resistivity of tungsten is

5.6 x 10-8ohm meter. The materials with lower resistivities offer less resistance to the flow of charge; they are better conductors. Here tungsten will offer more resistance if used in wires.
