Question

What will happen when a voltmeter is connected in series and an ammeter is connected in parallel?

Open in App
Solution

Voltmeter has a very high resistance and used to potential difference between two points while ammeter has very low resistance and used to measure the current.

If voltmeter is connected in series then due to its high resistance and it will not allow current to flow through the circuit it will show no deflection or a very low deflection .It may get damaged also. Similarly if ammeter is connected in parallel then due to its low resistance the whole current will pass through it and the ammeter may get damaged due to excessive joule heating further it will show a very large deflection as whole current passes through it.
