When 3g of magnesium reacts with 5g of oxygen then 5g of magnesium oxide will be formed, using only 2g of oxygen. The remaining 3g of oxygen will remain unreacted.
The law which governs this is Law of definite proportion states that a chemical compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by mass.
