Solution

Given statement is based on the law of conservation of linear momentum.

Initial momentum of the system is zero.

When bullet is fired it gets momentum. To make final momentum zero gun is recoil hence get same momentum in opposite direction.

Momentum of bullet = 0.01 *250 = 2.5 kg-m/s

Momentum of gun = 5 *(-0.5) = -2.5 kg-m/s

Initial momentum = final momentum.
