Question

When dilute sodiun chloride is electrolysed using graphite electrodes, the cation which is discharged at the cathode most readily is _____ {Na1+, OH1_, H1+, Cl1-}

Solution

When dilute sodiun chloride is electrolysed using graphite electrodes, the cation which is discharged at the cathode most readily is H+ ions.

Since it is a dilute NaCl solution H+ ions concentration is more.

When dilute sodium chloride solution is electrolysed using graphite electrodes, the Na+ and H+ ions are attracted to the cathode. The Cl- and OH- ions are attracted to the anode.

The hydrogen ions accept electrons more readily than the sodium ions. As a result, H+ ions gains electrons from cathode are discharged as hydrogen gas, (which bubbles off at cathode) and Na+ ions remain in solution.
