when ice comes in contacts with skin, there is a cooling sensation.however,in case of steam severe burns are formed on the skin how will you account this?
Ice has more cooling effect than water at 0o C, while steam cause more burns than boiling water or ice. Ice is converted into liquid state by absorbing the latent heat of fusion. Hence, ice will absorb more energy at 0oC. As we know, the more is the energy absorbed, the more is the cooling effect. Thus the cooling effect of ice at 273 K or 0o C is more. While steam causes more burns than ice because steam has more energy than boiling water. It possesses the additional latent heat of vapourization. Therefore, burns produced by steam are severe.
