Solution

There are three types of twins born. They are Non Identical twins, Identical twins and Siamese twins.

Fraternal Twins (or) Non Identical Twins:

  • When two egg cells are fertilized by a different sperm, two embryos are formed.
  • Can be of the same sex or opposite sex
  • Don't have to look at all alike.

Identical Twins:

  • When one egg after being fertilized by one sperm, the embryo divides into two halves
  • Genetically identical
  • Usually of the same sex

Conjoined Twins (or) Siamese) Twins:

  • When one egg after being fertilized by one sperm, the embryo does not separate
  • Twins develop attached to one another.

Triplets:

Triplets are known as Multiples. The majority of triplets are trizygotic. They are formed when three individual eggs are fertilized by three separate sperm. These are identical babies. They can be the same or opposite genders.

There are “dizygotic” multiples from two eggs specifically. A set of triplets may be composed of identical twins from one egg and a third non-identical sibling from a second egg.
