It is SO2 which dissolves in water that leads to acid rain. It reacts with water to form sulphurous acid.

SO2 + H2O ---------> H2SO3
Also , NO2 dissolves in water to form nitric acid which leads to acid rain.


Marble stone majorly contains Calcium carbonate, which reacts with the acid rain water as follows:

CaCO3 + H2SO4 --------> CaSO4 + H2O + CO2

Thus the marble statues are damaged.
