Question

When white light is passed through a prism the different colors in the white light get refracted differently. Why does this happen?

Solution

Good question!

This is because the refractive index of the light depends on the wavelength of radiation. As different colors of light have different wavelengths, each of the colors will have a different refractive index. Due to this, the different colors are deviated differently, and thus, separate after refraction.
