(i) We know that hydrogen gas is the gas which burns with a pop sound. Thus the gas liberated wen zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid is hydrogen, and the reaction is a displacement reaction in which zinc displaces hydrogen from the acid.

(ii) A balanced chemical equation for the reaction is as follows

Zn (s) + 2HCl (aq) → ZnCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)
