  • In the 19th century, thousands of Indian and Chinese indentured labourers went to work on Plantations, in mines, and in railway and road construction projects around the world
  • These workers were promised return travel to India after they have worked for 5 years on their employer’s plantations
  • Most of the Indian indentured labourers came from present day regions of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Central India and districts of Tamil Nadu
  • The Indian indentured labourers were lured to this vicious slavery because of decline of cottage industries, rise in land rents, failure of poor to pay their rents, etc
