Question

where does graphite get the ions required to conduct electricity?

Open in App
Solution

Graphite does not contain free ions; it conduct electricity because of free electron. Actually in graphite each C atom is bonded to three C atoms via sharing of three electrons with one electron of three carbon atoms. Fourth electron of each carbon atom remains free and can move from one site to another and give rise to conduction of electricity.
