1. True weight (W)of the body acting vertically downwards.
2. Buoyant force or upward thrust (w), equal to the weight of the liquid displaced acting vertically upwards.
Relation between these two forces :
If W >w, then body will sink to the bottom of the liquid.
If W < w, then the body will rise above the surface of the liquid to such an extent that the weight of the liquid displaced by the immersed part of the body becomes equal to the weight of the body. Hence, the body will float.
