Question

which is stronger base naoh and koh.explain

Open in App
Solution

The basic character of hydroxides is due to the low ionisation enthalpies of alkali metals. Because of low ionisation energies the M-O bond in MOH is weak and it can cleave to give OH- ions in the solution. (M = metal)
Since, the ionsisation enthalpy decreases down the group, therefore the basic strength of hydroxides increases. Hence, KOH is stronger base than NaOH.
