which of the following substances in water will show acidic properties? state reason.

sugar,carbon dioxide,acetic acid,alcohol,sulphur dioxide,urea.

Open in App
Solution

i) Sugar solution is a neutral solution. It is a covalent compound and does not dissociate into ions.

ii) Carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid in water, hence it is acidic in nature:
H2O + CO2 H2CO3
(carbonic acid)

iii) Acetic acid in water is acidic in nature, since acetic acid is weakly acidic.
CH3COOH(aq) +H2O(l) ⇋ CH3COO-(aq) +H3O+ (aq)

iv) Alcohol in water is a neutral solution.

v) Sulphur dioxide in water forms sulphurous acid, hence it is acidic in nature.
SO2 + H2O H2SO3

vi) Urea solution is a neutral solution as it doesnot dissociate into ions.
