The Balkan region was under the control of the Ottoman Empire from 15^th century till 1923. The period was marked by violent struggles for freedom. From early 20^th century onwards, the Christian regions of the empire united in alliance against the Turkish Ottoman rulers. It led to the outbreak of the first Balkan war in 1912-13 and eventually, the First World War in 1914.
