The Balkan region was under the control of the Ottoman Empire from 15th century till 1923. The period was marked by violent struggles for freedom. From early 20th century onwards, the Christian regions of the empire united in alliance against the Turkish Ottoman rulers. It led to the outbreak of the first Balkan war in 1912-13 and eventually, the First World War in 1914.
