Question

which product is formed at cathode anode during electrolysis of aq. cuso4 with inert electrode platinum.

Open in App
Solution

When the electrolysis of aqueous solution of copper sulphate is carried out , the positively charged Cu2+ ions migrate to cathode and the reduction takes place as follows :
Cu2+ + 2e- → Cu
Thus Cu gets deposited at cathode.

At anode oxidation takes place .
H2O → 1/2O2 + 2H+ + 2e-
i.e oxygen gas is liberated.
