  • Giuseppe Garibaldi is the most celebrated freedom fighter of Italy
  • He was a sailor in merchant navy and joined the Young Italy Movement founded by Mazzini in 1833
  • He participated in Republican uprising in Piedmont in 1834 which was suppressed and as a result of this, he fled to South America where he lived in exile till 1848
  • In 1854, he supported Victor Emmanuel II who tried to unify Italian states
  • In 1860, Garibaldi led the famous Expedition of the Thousand to South Italy
  • Volunteers joined the expedition and in due course of time they grew to about 30,000
  • This group was popularly known as Red Shirts
  • In 1867, Garibaldi led an army of volunteers to Rome to fight for the unification of Italy, Papal States
  • French army was stationed near Papal States and the Red Shirts fought bravely with the combined troops of France and Papal
  • In 1870, during the war with Prussia, France withdrew its troops from Rome and Papal States joined unified Italy
