Actually smallest unit of a compound is molecule. Molecule is formed of two or more atoms. But molecule as a whole is a single entity.
Whereas a metal or an element is usually identified by a smallest unit or entity called an atom.
In one mole of a compound there are always 6*1023 atoms or molecules .
