Question

why alkalies have low melting and boiling points?

Open in App
Solution

In Alkali metals, there is one valence electron. Thus, the binding energy i.e. energy required to remove the electron is less and, the energy binding the atoms to the crystal lattice of the metal is low. Hence, the metallic bonds are weak and can be easily broken resulting in alkali metals having low boiling point and low meting point.
