Question

why alpha hydrogen atoms are acidic?

Open in App
Solution

Oxygen is extremely electronegative in a carbonyl group and it attracts the electron cloud towards itself, as a result developing a partial positive charge on the alpha carbon. Due to this positive charge alpha carbon looses its hydrogen readily in order to reduce its positive charge. Therefore, alpha hydrogen is very acidic.
