Question

why an ordinary glass tumbler breaks when we pour very hot tea or milk in it

Open in App
Solution

Glass is a poor conductor of heat as well as electricity. When we pour hot liquids in it, the inside of the glass gets hotter compared to its outside. Heat causes it to expand while the cold tries to keep it in its initial state. This difference in temperatures is the cause of the glass cracking and breaking up.
