why are cement / concrete floors made into smaller section with metal / glass strips in between ?

Solution

Hi,

In large flooring like that in concrete roads, the floor is divided into smaller sections separated by suitable substances to keep gaps to let the settled concrete expand. It is done because concrete can only withstand compressive stress but cannot withstand tensile stress. Expansion (due to various factors) results in tensile stress.
