Question

Why are rare earth elements placed seperately in the periodic table?

Open in App
Solution

Rare earth metals belong to group 3 and the 6th and 7th periods of the periodic table. They are given a separate position in the periodic table so that the periodic table looks simplified. If the periodic table is expanded horizontally, these elements can be placed in their respective periods but this makes the representation of the periodic table clumpsy. So they are given a separate place.
