We know " Two quantities of the same kind can be compared by subtraction method or division method . "

In Subtraction method : we find how much more ( or less ) is one quantity then the other .
And
In division method : We find how many times is one quantity of the other . Here quotient is nothing but the ratio of two quantities .

And

A ratio is the comparison of two or more quantities of the same kind using division .
So,
ratio between a and b can be written as a : b or ab and read as a is to b .
