why can't brush bordered cuboidal epethilium be present in the inner lining of the stomach rather than brush bordered columnar epithelium??
Brush bordered columnar epithelium lines most of the organs of digestive tract such as stomach and intestine. It has many functions which makes it ideal cell for stomach lining rather than cuboidal cells.
Those functions include:
1. Absorption: these cells are responsible for absorbing nutrients from the digested food, columnar epithelial cells in these cases have multiple finger like projections which increase the surface area of cell. More the surface area of the cell more nutrients it will absorb.
2.Secretion: columnar epithelial cells are also involved in secretion of hydrochloric acid for the use in the digestive process.
3. Protection: columnar cells are designed to protect the tissue which they line, they produce mucus that coats the stomach and protect in from getting digested.
4. These cells are thick which allows them to withstand the damage caused by the stomach acid.
