why can't soap form much lather in hard water? i know that hard water contains magnesium and other salts, but why can't soap react with them?

Hard water contains Calcium and magnesium and they do react with Sodium stearate and forms Magnesium and Calcium Stearate which is a white precipitate and thus instead of forming lather it forms Scum.
The reaction is as follows:

2C₁₇ H₃₅ COO^-+ Ca²⁺ â†’ Ca ( C₁₇ H₃₅ COO^-)₂
