why can't we use lightning as a source of energy?

Good question. Lightning is a natural phenomenon where enormous amount of charge is transferred between clouds and earth. Trying to capture the high amount of charge during a lightning is like trying to pour a huge bucket of water on a small spoon. During lightning so much charge is transferred in a fraction of second that no such electric device is invented yet to capture it.
