Question

WHY CAN WURTZ REACTION NOT BE USED TO PREPARE ALKANES CONTAINING ODD NUMBER OF CARBON ATOMS

Open in App
Solution

Wurtz reaction cannot be used for the preparation of alkanes of odd number carbon.

Because alkanes which are produced in the reaction have double number of carbon atoms to the alkyl halide taken.

and if two dissimilar alkyl halides are taken as the reactants, then a mixture of alkanes is obtained as the product..
