Question

Why central atom in coordination compound referred to as lewis acids?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student!

The lewis acids are those species which accepts an electron pair, and since the central metal atom when react with the electron donor ligand molecules or species they accepts the electrons and form the co-ordinate bond and then the co ordination compound. So, the central metal atom is considered as the lewis acid.

For ex: For the complex compound of silver, [Ag(NH3)2]+ , the lewis base/ligand is NH3 while lewis acid is Ag+ ion and co ordination no. is two.
