• Democracy produces a government that is responsive through the mechanism of elections. Elections make the representatives accountable to people and ensure that they have to explain their decisions. This ensures accountability of the law makers towards their constituencies and they have to take into account the interests of all sections of society.

• Democracy produces a legitimate government through the following mechanisms:

  1. Conduct of free and fair elections that ensure the accountability of the government and election of representatives to legislate and govern on behalf of people.

  2. It enables open and public debate on legislations and policies.

  3. Citizens have the right to be informed about the government and its functioning.

• Accountable: People have the right to choose their rulers and people will have control over the rulers. This makes the rulers accountable to the people.
