Question

why did colonial government concidered forests as un productive ??

Open in App
Solution

The colonial government considered forests as unproductive because:
  • The growing urban population led to a growing demand of crops and therefore, the colonial regime aimed at forests for expansion of land under cultivation
  • The regime considered that the forests did not yield any produce and revenue, and bringing them under cultivation yielded both
  • Commercial crops like jute, wheat, and cotton offered better revenue. Because of this, more and so more forests were turned into cultivable land.
