Why did the british give more imporotance to cash crops rather than food crops ?
1) During the colonial period, cultivation expanded for various reasons. Firstly, British directly encouraged the production of commercial crops like jute, sugar, wheat and cotton. The demand for these crops increased in 19th century in Europe due to growth of population and to support growing industrial production
2) More profits could be earned from these crops as they proved to be raw materials for European industries and also to feed the growing population there
