Bombay witnessed rising trade in cotton, opium, and establishment of several industries.
Large number of migrant workers and traders, bankers, and shopkeepers came to settle in Bombay.
Only one fourth of the total population during this time were born in Bombay, the rest were migrants
Major influx of workers was from the neighboring districts like Ratnagiri
Initially women constituted about 23% of the total work force, that came down to about 10% due to introduction of machinery
The famine of Kutch also drove large number of people to Bombay
