Solution

Reasons for demography change in Bombay in 1854 were as follows:
  • Bombay witnessed rising trade in cotton, opium, and establishment of several industries.
  • Large number of migrant workers and traders, bankers, and shopkeepers came to settle in Bombay.
  • Only one fourth of the total population during this time were born in Bombay, the rest were migrants
  • Major influx of workers was from the neighboring districts like Ratnagiri
  • Initially women constituted about 23% of the total work force, that came down to about 10% due to introduction of machinery
  • The famine of Kutch also drove large number of people to Bombay
