why did the ganga action plan fail?
Ganga Action Plan was launched in the year 1985 with the purpose of reviving the river. However, unplanned urbanisation and industrialization has taken its toll on the river and it has been damaged beyond repair leading to the failure of Ganga Action Plan.
As per the Government of India estimate of 1986, over 1300 mld of sewage from more than 100 cities situated along the 2525 km length of the river Ganga was directly discharged into the river.
