Solution

Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, Afghanistan, ruled from 997 to 1030, and extended control over parts of Central Asia, Iran and the north-western part of the subcontinent. He raided the subcontinent almost every year – his targets were wealthy temples, including that of Somnath, Gujarat. Indian sub continent was divided into fragmented empires. Each trying to control other areas. One particularly prized area was the city of Kanauj in the Ganga valley. Thus, a lack of unified opposition, at constant war with each other, attracted Mahmud of Ghazni to attack and loot.
