Solution

Coal and petroleum are both fossil fuels which are formed from the decomposition of organic matter i.e. remains of dead plants and animals. Since plants and animals themselves contain nitrogen, sulphur, hydrogen (these elements are present in proteins, amino acids, lipids and other biomolecules), therefore the substances which they form on decomposition also contain these elements.

The combustion of coal and petroleum releases carbon dioxide. This gas causes global warming. Carbon monoxide is released when coal and petroleum undergo combustion in insufficient supply of air.
