Question

Why Do Hydrogen Being A Non Metal Loses An Electron It Could Gain One Electron To Attain Noble Gas Configuration

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen has atomic number 1, it can loose and gain one electron to get stable noble gas configuration. In case of strongly electropositive metals like alkali metals it gain one electron and becomes H- ion while in case of non metals it loose one electron and becomes H+ ion. This is because of the fact non metals has a very high electron gain enthalpy.
