Question

why do isopropanol and butanol not have OH in their formulae?

Open in App
Solution

The structure of butanol is CH3CH2CH2CH2OH, and the structure of isopropanol is CH3CH(OH)CH3. Both the two structures include OH in their formula. However, while writing the molecular formula we write, C4H10O and C3H8O. The molecular formula does not reveal the functional group present in the compound.
