Question

why do not unsaturated hydrocarbons undergo substitution reactions?

And why do not saturated hydrocarbon undergo addition reaction?

Open in App
Solution

In unsaturated hydrocarbons, due to presence of double bonds, reactants are added inorder to attain stability by trying to become saturated, hence addition reactions are preffered in Unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Incase of Saturated hydrocarbons, since there are no double bonds, addition cannot take place and hence the only reaction preffered is substitution.
