why do plants reproduce by vegetative propagation when they can reproduce sexually?

Vegetative propagation (asexual reproduction) is quick, rapid and does not involve or require participation of two parents. Single plant can give rise to another new plant. New plants produced that are similar to the parent. Asexual reproduction is more reliable than sexual reproduction.
