Question

Why does a bottle filled with dry ice burst when its lid is closed?

Open in App
Solution

Dry ice is frozen Carbon Dioxide which is a gas under standard temperature and pressure conditions. It is solid below temperature (-78.5oC, or -109.3oF). It sublimates(directly converts to CO2 gas) at −78.5 °C at Earth atmospheric pressures. When it is kept in plastic bottle with closed lid at atmospheric temperature and pressure it starts converting into CO2 gas. The pressure inside the bottle increases as the quantity of gas increases but lid is closed so it does not find its way out.High pressure inside the bottle cause bursting of bottle.
