Question

why does a electrical impulse in order to pass across the synapse travel in a chemical medium?

Open in App
Solution

Chemicals released by other neurons will trigger a nerve impulse.

More to Know:

  • The electric impulse of our body is very minute and passes the information between parts.
  • Without electric impulses, it would be impossible for our heart to beat, or for signals to travel to and from our brain.
  • Neurons and muscle cells are electrically excitable cells, that they can transmit electrical nerve impulses.
  • Our neurons carry messages in the form of electrical signals called nerve impulses. Neurons have to be excited to create a nerve impulse. Light, sound or pressure etc can stimulate our neurons, but mostly chemicals released by other neurons will trigger a nerve impulse. The densely packed millions of neurons actually never touch. When a nerve impulse reaches the end of one neuron, a release of neurotransmitter diffuses across a junction and induces the next neuron.
