Question

why does a steel needle gently placed on the surface of water float on it instead of sinking ?

Open in App
Solution

A needle floats on the water surface because of the surface tension of the water. Surface tension is the force acting per unit area in the plane of the interface between the fluid surface and any other substance. When this force balances with the gravitational pull on the needle, the needle remains float on the surface of the water.
