why does a virus need a host cell to perform its functions?

Open in App
Solution

Viruses are the minute infectious particles which consists of DNA or RNA as their genetic material enclosed in a protein coat. They lack their own cellular machinery and metabolic enzymes to synthesise proteins and chemicals. So, they insert their genetic material into the host cell and use its cellular machinery and enzymes to replicate, reproduce and synthesise their proteins. Thus, they need a host cell to perform its functions.
