Question

why does an ice cube float on water

Open in App
Solution

As the ice has cage like structure thus, the ice of same mass as that of water occupies larger volume than the water. Thus the density of ice is less than water. When ice is placed in water, due to lesser density it displaces water, thus a buoyancy force acts on it in the upward direction and it floats.
