Question

why does butan-2-ol has lesser boiling point than butan-1-ol?

Open in App
Solution

As we know alcohols form hydrogen bonding.
In Butan-2-ol , OH group is sterically hindered but in Butan-1-ol the OH group is terminal. so the extent of hydrogen bonding formation is more in case of Butan-1-ol as compared to Butan-2-ol.
As the extent of hydrogen bonding increses, it will increase the boiling point of compound. Hence Butan-1ol will have higher boiling point than Butan-1-ol.
