Question

why does CO AND CO+ HAVE SIGMA ANTIBONDING 2s ORBITAL AT HIGHER ENERGY THAN SIGMA AND PIE ANTIBONDING 2P ORTIALS IN MOT

Open in App
Solution

As the 2p orbitals are occupied so they take a lower energy position, the 2s orbital which is also the HOMO orbital has higher energy and is also more reactive. This occurs mainly due to electronegativity difference between C and O.
