It happens because longitudes are not parallel lines converge near the poles, the extent between two longitudes decreases that mean they come closer and closer to each other. This is however not the case with latitudes. Latitudes are parallel lines and the distance is fixed between any two points. Therefore though the difference between both latitude and longitude is nearly same i.e. 30 degrees but India covers more land from north to south i.e. 3214 km as compared to east and west i.e. 2933 km.
